“Get out of YOUR OWN WAY.  Often, we’re our own worst enemy when working towards our goals.”  Robert Kiyosaki

Have you ever dreamed of- starting a business, finishing your college degree, writing a book, making a movie, etc.-but for whatever reason, the dream was deferred?  We convince ourselves that if this hadn’t happened or that situation hadn’t occurred, we’d probably be further ahead or at least closer to satisfying our goals and/or dreams.  It may appear as if an obstacle or some type of hurdle is the culprit that has ALWAYS impeded forward progress, but is that true?  Or is the real reason because we get IN OUR OWN WAY?  What do you think?  Do you think we default on our dreams because we get IN OUR OWN WAY?   I DO!!!   I believe that WE are our biggest saboteurs because we get IN OUR OWN WAY.  So for this week’s blog, Iets talk SHIP about getting IN OUR OWN WAY!!!

Throughout the years, GOD has blessed me with some wonderful ideas that could have generated great wealth and changed the trajectory of my life.  For instance, in the 80s while in college, a few friends and I came up with the idea to start a delivery service business called “At your Service.”  Its concept was to run errands for people-dry cleaner runs, grocery store run, etc.  In between classes, we met weekly, strategized, and developed a business plan.  But when our senior year came around, we had to decide whether to continue with this business idea or graduate and move on.  LOL, you already know what we choose because 20 years later, a host of concierge services such as Uber, Grub hub, etc. emerged claiming to be “At your Service.”  A girlfriend who was involved in the planning stages will periodically mention the business and we just laugh.  But, I’m sure our laughter is to keep from crying especially since we both know, the reason it ended was that……. we got IN OUR OWN WAY.  Although back then, I thought things simply fell apart and CRUMBLED, BUT realize now….that there are no if’s, and, or butts about it, it failed because we got IN OUR OWN WAY

GOD has yet again given me another idea that if successful could change the trajectory of my life.  But in order for this idea to manifest, I had to see if I possessed the ability to move out of MY OWN WAY, and discovered that I DID!!   Moving out of MY OWN WAY forced me to address my phobias and fears and required that I clear my mind and rid my thoughts of negative self talk-not being worthy, doubting it will work, inability to fund it, etc.  Moving cleared my mental path allowing me to destroy those imaginary obstacles and hurdles once perceived.  Moving out of MY OWN WAY quieted my thoughts and enabled me to hear GOD’S plan clearly.  Moving revealed that all I needed to do was focus on what GOD was telling me to do.  Moving taught me that I needed to relinquish control.  It made me understand that I didn’t need to see the entire staircase, all I needed to see was the STEP that was directly in front of me.  Moving made me understand that the excuses and fears….I’m too old, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the resources,…etc. are the hurdles and obstacles we use to get IN OUR OWN WAY.    So stop getting IN YOUR OWN WAY.

I’m done making excuses. With this idea, since I decided to move out of MY OWN WAY and TRUST GOD to lead, it’s progressing. I am praying, listening, and TRUSTING GOD to reveal what I need to know when I need to know it. Now that I’ve moved out of MY OWN WAY, I am confident that since the idea came from GOD, HE will make the provisions for HIS plan to be successfully implemented. After all, HIS word tells us in Jeremiah 29:11, “for I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Moving out of OUR OWN WAY is an eye-opening, revealing process that is lifelong, and I am grateful that I finally started the process and hope you start too…..let’s TRUST GOD declarations and stop getting IN OUR IN WAY!!!

  1. Thanks so much Angie. I appreciate your support. Girl, AYS was a gift that we never unwrapped…lol.

  2. What an excellent read and reminder, Val!

While reading this weeks blog, I could think of so many instances throughout my life where I’ve gotten in “my ‘own-selfs’ way”. However, what I learned, and continue to learn, is that I must seek God first in all situations. Your reference of Jeremiah 29:11 is a verse that I focus and meditate on. It reminds me that He knows my path and I must be obedient to His Word. Val, thank you for sharing your story and continuing your great work with keeping us readers informed and engaged. Your topics are always interesting and thought provoking. I also appreciate reading the feedback of others as it allows us to expand/stretch our thoughts! ❣️

PS.. At Your Service was definitely ahead of its time and an excellent idea!😉

  3. I’m so glad that you enjoyed it. Di, I’m learning that although I love and trust GOD with all my heart, I’ve never actually stepped out on faith…or for anything beyond my control. Over the last few months I’ve made a commitment to stretch out on Jeremiah 29. From here on out, imma just focus on the step (not steps) in front of me instead of trying to see the staircase. Thanks for your unyielding support! Love ya

  4. Amen!
